“Most people look out a train window and see a tree. This author sees everything at once.” 

Bill held up his book with a knowing smile, sharing wisdom from an autistic author who stretches the imagination. That’s Bill in a nutshell—he makes you see the world differently, too. 

In the backyard of one of PRC’s long-term supportive housing homes for clients who’ve completed 90-day residential treatment, a quiet sanctuary thrives. Lush with greenery, alive with intention; this isn’t just a garden—it’s a reflection of Bill, a longtime resident in his 70s who has tended to this healing space for years. 

PRC staff were invited to visit Bill and learn about his journey through recovery and growth. We expected a conversation about how gardening in the home’s backyard helps him stay grounded. What we experienced was a masterclass in gratitude that would stay with us long after we left. 

A Different Way of Seeing Thank You 

“We don’t say thank you enough,” Bill told us, settling into his chair overlooking the backyard garden he’s lovingly maintained. “When someone gives you a compliment, kindly say thank you. Don’t brush it off. If you say, ‘it was nothing,’ you’re not letting them give the compliment. You’re taking it away.” 

That lesson felt simple, but profound. Bill sees gratitude as a gift in motion, like the seeds he plants. “A compliment can be like a seed,” he explained. “Let it take root. Let it grow. If you don’t accept it, you’re not giving it a chance to become something.” 

Bill knows about growth, both in soil and in spirit. Before arriving at PRC, his path was marked by heartbreak, trauma, and deep personal loss. He struggled with substance use that took hold as a way to numb grief and silence pain, especially after losing two partners he loved deeply. The weight of that loss, combined with the ensuing financial instability, led him to a state of isolation. 

But Bill also knew he didn’t want to stay in that place. He reached for help—and found PRC. 

Here, with compassionate support, he began to rebuild. He found stability through PRC’s residential treatment, and surrounded by community, he started to heal. Through it all, he’s found a way to stay grounded, literally and emotionally—working hard each day to maintain what he calls “a clean body and a sober mind.” 

After twelve years with PRC, Bill acknowledges his recovery journey is always a work in progress and that efforts like restoring the garden add to his fulfillment.

“Sobriety is much more than stopping using, it’s a continuous journey of staying awake and being present. It’s actively embracing unbound possibility and growth. Through sobriety, I feel as though I have the mind of a five-year-old in wonder.”

The Gift of Stability 

“PRC gave me stability,” he said. “the building and structure of fulfillment. I don’t know what that looks like, but I know what it feels like.” 

He shares that he’s had a charmed life, not because it’s been easy, but because it’s been full; full of music—his parents raised him on everything from classical to The Beatles; full of curiosity—museum visits, churches, record shops; and now, full of reflection and acceptance, like when a neighbor at the gym told him how much joy he brings just by showing up. 

That joy is real. Sitting with Bill, overlooking his garden, you feel it. You slow down. You breathe deeper. You listen more closely. And maybe, like us, you gain a better understanding that gratitude isn’t just a feeling—it’s a practice.

PRC’s behavioral health support and stable housing provided a place for Bill to continue his healing journey in community, surrounded by peers, regular group support, and dedicated case managers; he’s been able to root himself in this way of life and share it freely. Whether in the garden, the Zen Center where he meditates, or simply riding the bus, Bill channels his gratitude into shared energy of safe passage, unlimited growth, goodwill, and connection.
