September 19, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm PDT

Join Quest Diagnostics and PRC at the second annual San Francisco Healthcare Community Think Tank: a virtual roundtable among activists, community leaders,  and healthcare providers as they share best practices, programs, and new ideas to address the healthcare needs of the most vulnerable members of the San Francisco community.

Register today to join conversation with our expert panelists.

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the stark inequities in health and healthcare across our communities. Decades of research on “social determinants” support that factors other than biology may play a greater role in determining one’s health.1 Thought leaders assessing the impact of COVID-19 point out that limited access to healthy food, exposure to toxic pollutants and infectious diseases, the threat of violence, and the chronic stress of racial discrimination strongly influence the likelihood of high blood pressure, diabetes, and other conditions that are making communities of color more vulnerable to the worst outcomes from COVID-19, including death.

Further, there are several remarkable similarities to the early days of the HIV epidemic, including the broad asymptomatic population, the inequitable impact on a small segment of our community, and the lack of knowledge about the virus limiting our ability to treat or vaccinate against it.

Now more than ever—at a time when social justice movements are sweeping across the nation—it’s clear we should examine the social determinants that can impact overall population health as a first step towards developing strategies to help address root causes of health inequity. Working together, we can build best practices that assist in the fight against significant health issues disproportionately affecting communities of color and vulnerable populations.
